Surprised Kitty is a video of a young grey-and-white kitten being tickled that reacts by throwing its hands back whenever the tickling stops.
Origin
On October 13th, 2009, YouTuber rozzzafly[1] uploaded a video of her friend’s 6-10 week old kitten Atilla Fluff being tickled repeatedly. Within two weeks, the video had over 7,000,000 views and it accumulated over 61 million views as of March 13th, 2012.[2]
Spread
On November 27th, 2009, the video was submitted to Reddit[8] in a post titled “Little suprised kitty makes happiness” and reached the front page accumulating 2,895 up votes prior to being archived. The following day, the video was posted to the Internet Humor site College Humor.[3] On November 29th, it was featured on the cute animal media website Cute Overload[7] where it received over 260 comments. The same day, journalist Sean Bonner tweeted the video calling it “the best 17 seconds of your life”:
On November 30th, BoingBoing[4] posted the video, the entertainment blog Dlisted[6] claimed it was the most interesting submission that weekend and the web culture blog Urlesque[5] compared the kitten’s reaction to the performance dance move called “jazz hands.” On December 2nd, Ray William Johnson included Surprised Kitty in an episode of “=3”[9] (shown left), comparing the kitten to the handicapped South Park character Timmy, and ABC News showed the video in their morning broadcast (shown right).
On January 13th, 2010, Daniel Tosh put on cat ears, a tail and whiskers to reenacted the video on his Internet humor television show Tosh.0.[10] The Huffington Post[12] published an article calling the video “the cutest video of all time” on March 18th. On November 10th, Animal Planet[11] named Attilla Fluff America’s Cutest Cat.
