You may not know what a meme is but for sure you have encountered at least one while on the net. A meme in the context of the internet is a concept, usually a humorous one, that is spread from person to person via the internet. This is usually spread through social networking sites and there are even sites dedicated to collating and spreading memes like 9gag and Memebase. Memes are often employed as a way of viral or guerilla marketing because of the way it generates buzz and quickly spreads. Memes are often exploited as tools for marketing because in a way, it is a fad and reflective of trends.
