The Facebook Mythology

following is a list of myths and hoaxes regarding the social networking site, Facebook, as compiled by Trutv.com. You can check out the complete list at the original post here.

1. Facebook Timeline Hoax
Privacy on the Internet comes with an expiration date. Facebook users complained that the website's then-new timeline interface made private messages from 2007 public. Facebook explained that the messages were actually individual Wall posts that people had used to communicate with each other before Facebook implemented the Like and comment-on-a-post features. Apparently, part of the confusion is that back in '07, people were a lot less concerned about cyber-privacy.

2. Messages are not Private
A Facebook spokesperson confirmed that the company "is monitoring your private messages for links that have Like buttons." The links then have Likes attributed to them on their respective Facebook fan page. Granted, your personal information isn't attached to the new Like, but the idea of Facebook combing through your personal messages is unsettling

3. Julian Assange's Theory
Julian Assange of WikiLeaks accused Facebook of being the front for an intricate government spy network. Assange told Russia Today that the social network is nothing more than the "most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented." According to him, every time you share information or friend someone on Facebook, you're just making it easier for the government to track you. But Assange didn't mean to implicate Facebook as the front of a specific government agency, contrary to a popular rumor, and there is no evidence to back his claim anyway.

4. Facebook Censorship
Facebook has a team of contractors on standby to moderate content on the social network according to a list known as "the bible." Although the list rightly targets offensive racial jokes, sexual activity, and advocacy of violence, Facebook has caught some heat for censoring other material that people believe edges on the suppression of freedom of speech, including photos of breastfeeding moms. Facebook has promised to fix these errors in the future.

5. Abraham Lincoln Invented Facebook
Did you know that Abraham Lincoln invented Facebook in 1845? That is what Nate St. Pierre, a blogger, was able to get the internet community to believe. He "authenticated" this whopper of a lie by showing a fabricated newspaper article and setting up a long story about Lincoln's invention. The story went that the 16th POTUS had set up the paper-and-ink version of the social network, which included profile pictures and status updates, a whole 159 years before Zuckerberg.
